Although the itchy, red rash you may experience after coming in contact with certain substances is not usually serious, it can be annoying and uncomfortable. The condition is called contact dermatitis and is very common in both children and adults.

What is Contact Dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis is a skin inflammation, which occurs as a result of an allergic reaction to an allergen. Allergens are substances, which are not harmful, but the body is sensitive to them, and an allergic reaction occurs. In the case of contact dermatitis, when an allergen comes in contact with the skin, it can trigger a reaction.

Causes of Contact Dermatitis

There are many things, which may act as allergens in some people. Common triggers of contact dermatitis include cosmetics, lotions and perfume. Symptoms of Contact Dermatitis

A red rash or bumps on the skin are the most common symptoms of contact dermatitis. Itching at the site of the rash also often occurs. In some cases, the skin may become dry and cracked and be painful. In severe cases of contact dermatitis, blisters may form and crusting on the skin may develop.
